Our Story
Ombligo de Luna was born in 2020 as a social startup, focused on truly changing the way of doing business within the world of coffee.
Since then, we have been closely involved with the Cooperative Rincón Toningo. We have been walking together through this journey. Our compromise with the cooperative and the community is to bring wellness and development as a consequence of their good work and high quality coffee.
We invite you to get to know our story from the beginning and be part of it. We point out relevant events that occurred during our journey and that may be interesting to others. If for any reason, you want to know more details about our story, please feel free to contact us; we will always remain open to share it.
After a long period of gestation, the work on Ombligo de Luna begins. The essence of the company is conceptualized and represented with the creation of a logo. The foundations of the project were laid.
After doing a supplier analysis, we visited the Cooperative Rincón Toningo, which is characterized for being independent and with an authentic origin since its foundation in 2004. The community is located at 1250 meters above sea level.
Once a real bond was formed with the cooperative and all its members, the intentions of the company were formalized, with the signing of the first contract between the cooperative and Ombligo de Luna.
Full payment was made for the batch of coffee. We fully trust the producers of the Cooperative Rincón Toningo and truly understand the needs that the small producer has on a day-by-day basis. For this reason we maintain as a general rule a total payment in advance for the coffee the cooperative produces.
As of this date, the photographic recording for social networks was carried out in Rincón Toningo's community. The intention is to tell the story and the journey of the cooperative's coffee along the value chain till the final consumer.
Once the bases were laid, the company was legally founded. On this date, Ombligo de Luna was materialized as a social startup.
A course was carried out by the Cafecol A.C., with the sole purpose of updating the processes of specialty coffee within the cooperative. This was the first step in the permanent path of maintaining and improving the quality of coffee they produce.
The batch was delivered to Moretto’s warehouse, it consisted of two QQ of parchment coffee per member, giving a total of 805 kg of parchment coffee. It was left to “rest” to later carry out the entry cupping.
The cupping was carried out with a representative sample of the entire batch, organized by Cafecol A.C., and conducted by the Q Grader; Pedro Iván Flores Pérez. The entry cupping is made for parchment coffee.
After different processes of fermentation, washing and drying, the results were compared; each member had the opportunity to try and choose the option they liked the most.
We worked together with the cooperative to develop a prototype for the first economic project, aiming to ensure quality during their drying process. Get to know the Zaranda project here.
As part of the first contract, we acquired the compromise to deliver photographs of all members and their families; those that we have taken while doing our records. It´s important for us, because we perceive them as co-owners of them.
The last compromise that we had pending from the first contract with the cooperative was to support the actualization of their constitutive act, as part of the formalization of their company.
We are part of a global movement of companies and people who seek to build a new economy, which aims the well-being of people, societies and nature; using the force of the market to solve social and environmental problems.
